WENY News reported recently that a tragic motor vehicle accident along Interstate 86 in the area of Waverly, New York on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 18, 2021 led to two injuries and severe traffic delays along the highway.
According to a news release issued by officials with the New York State Police Department, the incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 18, 2021 along Interstate 86 near Waverly, a city on the New York / Pennsylvania state border. The crash involved a tractor-trailer, an SUV, and a pickup truck. At least two people suffered injuries described as serious by first responders.
For unknown reasons still under investigation, the SUV struck a guardrail, then went into the path of the truck and the tractor-trailer. Both the driver and passenger of the SUV were injured and taken to local hospitals.

The traffic caused massive traffic delays in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway near Exit 60 of Interstate 86, with 511NY.org reporting congested traffic throughout the area. Eastbound traffic on I-86 was completely blocked, including exits 60, 61, and 62, while westbound traffic was moving very slowly.
Several off-duty EMS personnel in the area were credited with assisting state police troopers at the accident scene before the arrival of ambulances. The interstate was reopened around 6:30 p.m. EST.
