LocalSyr.com reported on an accident on Interstate 481 Monday that left four vehicles damaged and a driver cited for multiple offenses.
The incident occurred around 6 pm on Monday when the DeWitt Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, DeWitt Fire Department and AMR ambulance all responded to word of a major accident on Interstate 481 near Jamesville Road.
A New York State Department of Transportation Highway Emergency Local Patrol (H.E.L.P.) unit had been parked on the shoulder of Interstate 481 while the driver helped a motorist change a flat tire, when a passing vehicle struck the H.E.L.P. truck. The vehicle, driven by a 32-year-old local man, had failed to move over and struck the disabled van after striking the truck, which hit the NY DOT employee. The vehicle then hit a third vehicle on the side of the roadway, which sent it careening across traffic and down an embankment.

The truck driver, fortunately, sustained only minor injuries from the incident. The driver who caused the accident was issued traffic tickets for failure to maintain lane and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, and the Town of DeWitt Police Department reminded drivers of the importance of moving over for emergency vehicles when their lights are activated.
