The video taken from the store located on East Broadway on the Lower East Side of the city clearly shows the assailant attacking the man who was purchasing his daily coffee and a piece of cake. The attacker landed a punch on the elderly gentleman’s face before snatching his cane and running out the door of the bodega.
“He just pushed me!” the 82-year-old told CBS News. “The guy stole my cane, too!”
Cook Hector Ponce, who works at the Big Apple Market, told reporter Andrea Grimes that he witnessed the entire incident.
“He (the suspect) asked him for money, and then he held him like that,” Ponce said, bunching the collar of his shirt” If you don’t give me money, I’m going to hurt you.”
When the victim didn’t give what his attacker wanted, the assailant snatched the man’s cane, pushed the victim to the ground, and took off down the street on foot.
Ponce was behind the counter of the store at the time of the attack. Another customer also witnessed part of the incident and took off after the man’s attacker, but could not catch him.
The male victim suffered a slight head injury in the incident but refused treatment. NYPD officers later came to the victim’s home to check on how he was and to interview the 82-year-old
