The New York Daily News reported recently that a retired New York City firefighter whose wife was killed in an October motor vehicle accident in Westhampton is suing Suffolk County in relation to the allegedly dangerous curve where the October accident took place.
The former FDNY firefighter, 69 years of age, has filed a $13,000,000 lawsuit against Suffolk County over the death of his wife, 63 years of age, for a curve on Montauk Highway deemed ‘dangerous’, after a catastrophic car wreck on Friday, October 16. The incident occurred when the woman was driving east around the curve while a man 89 years of age approached, heading west on the roadway. He crossed into her lane in the middle of the curve and the two drivers, both piloting Hondas, met head-on. Both drivers were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in the town of Riverhead but succumbed to their serious injuries. The only survivor of the crash was the woman’s dog.

According to attorneys for the retired firefighter, county officials knew of the dangers of the road but didn’t do enough to protect motorists from the dangers. The rumble strips and double yellow line painted on the curb were not enough, according to the complaint.
