Scaffolding Collapsed At A Mega-Development. 150 workers Sue Hudson Yards

Construction is one of the most dangerous industries to work in according to accident statistics. Each year, hundreds of construction workers are injured and quite a few are killed in accidents on construction sites across the country. In New York, statistics and reporting are maintained by the Department of Buildings. As of November 30th, 2019, there were 523 accidents reported across the five boroughs. These accidents resulted in 551 injuries and 11 fatalities. Manhattan had the greatest number of incidents with 292 accidents, followed by Brooklyn with 122 incidents.

The Commercial Observer reports that since 2013, 150 workers have sued Hudson Yards for on-the-job injuries.

On the morning of November 11, 2019, scaffolding located on the 18th floor of a $25 million Hudson Yards mega-development collapsed. There were two workers on the scaffolding when it collapsed. The work site was hit with a stop-work order after the incident, which left one worker seriously injured.

According to Department of Buildings records, the accident appeared to be the first at that site.

Court records tell a different story. Records indicate that the four injured workers were part of more than one hundred others who claim that they were injured building the 28-acre development.

Beginning in 2013 and through this year, nearly 150 workers at the site have filed personal injury lawsuits against the developer and other related companies. These lawsuits only encompass those that have been filed in the city’s Supreme Courts.

The string of lawsuits began in 2013 with a single lawsuit, which then became multiple suits in 2016 when construction on the site ramped up.

One of the most recent lawsuits was filed on January 8th by a worker who suffered traumatic head injuries as well as other life-altering injuries after a beam fell onto him on December 21st.
