The Suffolk Times reported recently on a tragic motor vehicle accident in Riverhead that led to the death of a pedestrian and the arrest of a Mattituck man for driving while intoxicated (DWI) late in the evening of Thursday, February 11.
According to a news release issued by the Riverhead Town Police Department as well as officials from the New York State Police, the incident took place between 10:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on February 11, 2021 near 953 West Main Street in Riverhead. Responding officers found a victim, not yet identified by police, in serious condition after having been struck by a vehicle driven by a Mattituck man, 54 years of age. The victim was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps., where he succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the accident.

The driver was determined by officers to be allegedly intoxicated and he was arrested at the scene and charged with felony DWI. He was arraigned the next morning before the Riverhead Town Justice. Upgraded charges are expected due to the death of the pedestrian. Police are asking any witnesses who may have information about the crash to contact police at 631-727-4500.
