The Independent reports that an elderly woman died in Eastport Monday afternoon after a fatal encounter with a box truck.
Around 3:00 p.m. on Monday, a 78-year-old woman from Whitestone was standing in front of a roadside farm and produce stand selling tomatoes, peaches, and corn. Their stand was set up in front of the famous Stargazer sculpture on County Road 111 about one-quarter mile north of Sunrise Highway and not far from the Long Island Expressway where the accident happened. According to Suffolk County Police, a 2011 Freightliner box truck was flagged as belonging to Delfino Insulation, driven by a 43-year-old Middle Island man. The box truck plowed into her, the stand, and the 58-year-old man from East Moriches running the stand.
The woman was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.
