According to officials with the New York State Department of Transportation and local law enforcement representatives, the incident took place just before rush hour on the morning of Tuesday, April 6, 2021, along the Hutchinson River Parkway, a major limited access thoroughfare serving New York City and its northern suburbs and extending I-678 up to the Connecticut state line. A tractor-trailer smashed into the Lincoln Avenue overpass along the parkway, forcing responders to close multiple lanes and causing severe traffic congestion along the parkway as well as nearby Cross County Parkway. Although the tractor-trailer was severely damaged by the collision, no serious injuries were reported.
The incident was especially problematic given that tractor-trailer and commercial traffic are barred by law from using the Hutchinson River Parkway. This is the second such accident in the last two weeks after another truck crashed in the same location.
The Lincoln Avenue overpass was already the site of a major construction project as crews are replacing the overpass structure, but the truck accident caused additional lane closures throughout rush hour.
