A 61-year-old Quebec-based tractor-trailer driver was headed southbound on the Thruway when he came upon stopped traffic. He attempted to avoid a collision but slammed into the Honda’s rear end, knocking it into the rear passenger side of a 2007 Kia Sedona minivan, then around 500 feet forward and off the southbound part of the roadway.
The Honda and the Kia were both occupied by members of the same family on an outing. In addition to the three fatalities, the driver and front-seat passenger of the Honda, as well as two passengers from the Kia, were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, while another Kia passenger was airlifted to Albany Medical Center with more serious injuries.
