According to officials with the New York State Police, the original incident took place between 3:10 p.m. and 3:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Monday, February 18, 2017, in Commack, on an overpass connecting the Long Island Expressway (LIE) to the Sagtikos Parkway. The state trooper, a three-year NYSP veteran 35 years of age, was assisting a motorist with a disabled vehicle and had been placing flares to warn oncoming traffic of the disabled vehicle when a vehicle came around a corner and struck him. He was medically transported to Southside Hospital in critical condition with severe injuries including major head trauma, where senior officials including the superintendent of the New York State Police gathered to support the trooper in his fight for recovery.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the trooper remained at the scene and was cooperative with first responders and investigators. No charges were immediately filed for the accident.
