Young children are often fascinated by lawnmowers and other yard equipment. Ensuring children are safely away from and out of danger while adults do yard work is essential. For one family in Canandaigua, a single moment of inattention could have turned into a tragedy.
According to a recent report released in The Democrat & Chronicle, a six-year-old boy was seriously injured in a riding mower accident at his home in Canandaigua on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
According to the statement released by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 12:10 p.m., deputies were called to Mobile Road, located just off of Route 332.
The 69-year-old relative of the young boy was operating a riding lawnmower at the time of the accident. While the man was backing the mower away from a stump, the boy ran up behind him in an effort to get his attention.
Because the man on the mower neither saw nor heard the boy, he was completely unaware of the boy’s presence and ran over the child. Because the blade deck was fully engaged at the time, the boy suffered severe injuries to his right leg.

Sheriff’s deputies and a New York State Trooper arrived at the scene of the accident and applied a tourniquet to the boy’s leg. The child was airlifted from the scene by Mercy Flight and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was taken immediately into surgery.
Officials said that the boy is still currently in the hospital but has not released any further information about his current condition.
