Every year, incidents involving fireworks become more and more prevalent. There is a reason why states, cities, and municipalities pass legislation regarding fireworks. In the hands of professionals, spectators can enjoy a breathtaking display. In the hands of the untrained, however, handling fireworks can end in tragedy.
That is what happened to one family in Long Island on Sunday, July 4, 2021. People Magazine reports that two related families lost their beloved dog and their home as a result of illegal fireworks.
The Suffolk Police Department said that two families were renting the home that burned. Half of the family had been out of the house at an outdoor carnival when the incident occurred.

One family member became aware of the fire when he was awakened by the heat of the flames that had started. He and the remaining family members were thankfully able to escape the blaze, an elderly dog that the family had since she was a puppy; however, could not be saved.
Investigators say that a neighbor had been lighting fireworks in a nearby ditch. One of the fireworks went into some bushes next to the home across the street and set the structure on fire.
“Everything was ruined, everything was burned,” a family member told reporters.
The Suffolk County Police Department is currently investigating the incident. So far, no arrests have been made.
