My Twin Tiers reported recently that a tractor-trailer accident occurred in upstate New York along the Interstate 86 corridor Wednesday afternoon near Elmira, shutting down portions of the westbound lanes for much of the day.
According to the New York State Police, the incident happened in the westbound lanes of I-86 on the afternoon of Thursday, December 10, shortly before 4:55 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Heavy snow blanketing the region created hazardous driving conditions with slick surfaces and limited visibility, and two westbound tractor-trailers collided near Exit 57 of Interstate 86 in the Elmira area.

According to witnesses at the scene, there were several minor injuries and three people needed assistance from first responders to exit one of the involved vehicles. The incident required the closure of portions of I-86, mostly in the westbound lanes, for several hours. Responding troopers from the New York State Police reported they were able to reopen all lanes by about 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST.)
The New York State Police made the following comment about the inclement weather conditions evidenced by the accident: “Residents should refrain from driving during Wednesday’s snowstorm and remain home if possible. Should you need to go out, use caution on the roads and leave space between you and the vehicles around you.”
