The Suffolk Times reports that a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Long Island has been indicted on charges of manslaughter.
The accident in the small town of Greenport took place on July 13, and took the life of an 87-year-old resident of the Peconic Landing retirement community. She was crossing the street at the corner of Front and Third Streets when a 2004 Honda Civic, turning right onto Front Street from Third Street, hit her and continued headed westbound following the early morning accident. The victim was taken to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, where she died of the injuries sustained in the accident.

Less than twelve hours after the incident, the driver attempted to return to Greenport and was apprehended by police, charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving without a license. He will now be arraigned before Acting Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho on the charge of second-degree manslaughter for the same incident.
The charge is considered a class C non-violent felony with a maximum sentence of fifteen years in prison. The suspect continues to face the previous charges in addition to the manslaughter charge. Bail will be set following the arraignment.
