Congested Traffic Contributed To A Multi-Vehicle Collision Involving Four Tractor-Trailers

Large trucks are an important part of the country’s economic infrastructure. More goods are transported by large trucks daily than by any other method. However, large trucks do pose a risk on our roadways.

In 2018, there were 4,136 people killed in accidents involving large trucks. 67% of those killed were passenger vehicle occupants and 15% were pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. The number of people killed in 2018 was a 31% increase in 2018 than it was in 2009. Accidents also claim the lives of the drivers and occupants of the trucks, accounting for a 51% increase in fatalities since 2009.

WHAM 13 reports that four tractor-trailers collided after a thruway crash left a driver in critical condition. Police are still trying to piece together evidence to determine what factors contributed to the collision.

The collision occurred on the New York State Thruway at around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to state troopers, traffic was already backed up due to a previous collision as the driver of a Ryder tractor-trailer approached the collision. The driver of the truck, identified as Christopher Schultz, failed to stop and collided with a tractor-trailer with the vehicle that was driving in front of him.

Schulz collision caused two more tractor-trailers to collide with one another, resulting in a chain-reaction crash.

Schultz suffered from major injuries and was taken by Mercy Flight helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital. None of the other drivers were injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
