ABC Channel 7 New York News reported recently that a tragic Long Island workplace accident at Washington Memorial Park in Mount Sinai led to the death of a man from Coram late in the morning of Thursday, February 25, 2021.
According to a news release issued by the Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Section, the incident took place between 8:25 a.m. and 8:35 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Thursday, February 25, 2021.at Washington Memorial Park, a cemetery located on Long Island at 855 Canal Road in Mt Sinai, NY. A cemetery worker from Coram, 42 years of age, was leveling out the bottom of a grave when the sides of the pit collapsed, burying him under seven feet of dirt. His coworkers attempted to dig him out, but by the time they could get to him, he had expired. He was declared dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Center.

Responding agencies included the Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Section, Suffolk County Fire Rescue, Suffolk County Department of Public Works, Middle Island Fire Department, Hagerman Fire Department, Selden Fire Department and Setauket Fire Department. The accident is currently under an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
