According to the Centers for Disease Control, 23,714 drivers and passengers in passenger vehicles died in accidents in 2016. More than half of teens and adults who were killed in those crashes were not wearing seatbelts. Seatbelts saved almost 15,000 lives in 2016. Seatbelt use can be the difference between life and death in a car accident.
In 2017, observed seatbelt use was at 91% in states that had primary enforcement laws. It dropped to 86% in states with secondary enforcement laws or no seatbelt laws. Under New York law, all front-seat drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts. Children under the age of 16 are also required to wear seatbelts in the back seat.
