Rear-end collisions are the most frequent types of collisions that occur in the United States according to the NHTSA. Approximately 29% of all traffic accidents that happen are rear-end collisions. This results in about 1.7 million rear-end accidents annually.
Of these accidents, about 1,700 people die and another 500,000 are injured. Rear-end collisions make up a significant percentage of accidents resulting in injury or fatality occurring on highways. “Fender benders” are also considered to be a type of rear-end collision.
Some common causes of rear-end collisions include aggressive driving, distracted driving, hazardous weather conditions, drowsy driving, and driving while intoxicated.
Newsday reports that a Ridge man has been killed in a rear-end collision that occurred in Holtsville.
The accident occurred at about 10 a.m. on June 18th on North Ocean Avenue near the intersection with Fox Ridge Drive in Holtsville.
A man driving a 2000 Pontiac was rear-ended by a man driving a 2004 Ford pickup truck.
56-year-old Donald Artis was driving the Pontiac when 46-year-old Craig Smith hit his vehicle. The accident caused Artis to lose control of his vehicle and strike a tree. Artis was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Smith was not criminally charged in the accident and instead was arrested for driving on a suspended license. He was freed on an appearance ticket charging him with aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree.
