The first traffic light ever put into use in the United States was placed at the intersection of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Ever since their invention, they have become mainstays of providing both traffic control and safety in cities across the United States. However, not everyone obeys traffic signals, leading to a significant number of crashes.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2018, 846 people lost their lives in accidents that were attributed to failure to obey a traffic signal. Because red-light runners have become such a common problem, many large cities have installed red-light cameras to catch drivers in the act of running a red light. As a result, these cameras have reduced red-light running crash rates by 21% in large cities. It has also reduced the rate of all fatal types of crashes at intersections by 14%.
