The truck driver failed to slow his big rig enough to avoid hitting congested traffic in the area. The tanker struck seven passenger vehicles, crossing several lanes of traffic and a concrete barrier wall before landing on its side in the HOV lane in the freeway’s westbound lanes. The truck then burst into flames and was completely destroyed by fire.
Officials say that four people were pronounced dead at the scene while nine others were hurt. They took six of the nine injured to area hospitals for treatment for their injuries. Those hurt in the crash range from 22 to 45 years of age.
The NTSB will investigate the crash.
