WENY has reported on a crash that happened earlier today between an SUV, a tractor trailer, and a pickup truck.
The crash shut down a portion of I-86 while police investigated and crews cleaned up the mess. NYSP told reporters that the driver and passenger of the SUV were hospitalized. They believe the SUV bounced off a guardrail, went into the path of the truck, and then the tractor trailer. The tractor trailer hit the side of the SUV.
Thankfully for the passengers, there were off-duty EMS members in the area who came by to assist before ambulances arrived. Traffic was backed up near exit 60 for hours. It is unknown why the SUV hit the guardrail in the first place.

This appears to be a classic case of overcorrection by a vehicle. When we go too far in one direction with a car, it’s easy to pull the wheel too far the other way. However, the car still has momentum and it could fling the car further than you think. Instead of getting back into their lane, the SUV whipped across several lanes.
Better to stop on the shoulder and wait for an opportunity to get back into traffic than risk oversteering. The SUV driver is lucky that their vehicle didn’t overturn.
