Smithtown Patch.com reported on a fiery single vehicle accident in Smithtown that led to the arrest of a man on Monday, September 28, according to Suffolk Police.
A 21-year-old Port Jefferson man was headed eastbound on Route 25 near Old Willets Path just before midnight on Monday, September 28. For reasons currently unknown and under investigation, he drove off the road and hit the guardrail before his car struck and heavily damaged a utility pole. The car came to a halt in a ditch near the roadway and caught fire, according to reports from responding officers.

Smithtown firefighters responded to a call about the overturned, on fire vehicle and responded with vehicles and with contacting PSEG Long Island to turn off the power to the damaged pole. They extinguished the car, which was fully engulfed in the fire, as well as surrounding land and vegetation. Firefighters were unable to locate the driver, however, searching around and under the car and in the woods nearby.
The man was later located near the Fourth Precinct in Hauppauge around 8:00 a.m., taken into custody, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. The investigation is still in progress by Suffolk County Police and eyewitnesses are asked to come forward.
