Just after noon Monday, a 2018 Ford pickup truck and 2016 Subaru suffered a collision nearby at the intersection of Venetian Promenade and Montauk Highway. In the aftermath of the wreck, the Subaru’s driver, an 85-year-old Atlantic Beach man, backed his vehicle into the eastbound lanes of the road, where it was struck by a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis occupied by a 78-year-old Massapequa man and his 76-year-old wife.
The Grand Marquis then veered off of Montauk Highway, through a fence, and into the water at a Lindenhurst marina.

Onlookers rushed to the water and several onlookers as well as two Suffolk cops, one on-duty and one off-duty that happened to be nearby, dove into the water and swam to the submerged vehicle. They were able to pull the man to safety first and then break the window glass to retrieve his wife. The woman was revived through the efforts of an off-duty Lake Success cop that was at the scene.
The involved drivers as well as the two Suffolk cops involved in the rescue were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip with injuries believed to be not life-threatening.
