Cyclist Seriously Injured In Babylon Village Crash, Driver Flees

Newsday reports that last Sunday, a bicyclist was struck and injured in a hit-and-run crash at a parking lot in Babylon Village.

The driver fled the scene, but police quickly caught up to her and arrested her for DWI. The accused driver has also been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury. According to the police report, the accused driver fled the scene but came back to the scene as a passenger 30 minutes later. Police found her vehicle and impounded it for examination.

The 60-year-old cyclist was seriously injured, but his life appears to be safe. It is unknown if he was wearing a helmet or not.

Even a low-speed crash in a parking lot can cause lasting damage. It doesn’t take much force to cause injury to soft tissues in a car, much less when you’re riding a bicycle. Even just nicking the handlebars of a bike can be enough to throw someone off. Because of the difference in speed between a car and a bicycle, even a slight encounter can cause a person to fall into harms way in front of a car.

Keep in mind, bicycles have many of the same road privileges as cars. When you’re driving, give bicycles at least three feet of space when you pass them to help keep both you and the rider safe. Also, needless to say, you should never drink and drive and you should always stay at the scene of an accident until you give your report.
