At Friedman & Simon, L.L.P., our team aims to financially support college students pursuing higher education. We award an annual $1,500 academic scholarship to a deserving candidate currently enrolled or accepted to an accredited college or university.
This year’s winner, Alex Lloyd, is a Kalamazoo University student who plans to study physics. Alex grew up with a fascination and appreciation for space, and becoming an astrophysicist will allow Alex to pursue this passion as a career.
Alex Lloyd Plans to Turn a Lifelong Passion for the Cosmos Into a Career
As a child, our scholarship winner loved all things outer space. Binging space documentaries and reading books about the solar system were some of Alex’s favorite pastimes, so pursuing a career in astrophysics is only fitting.
Alex reflects on the decision to study physics, saying, “It’s not really surprising that I became obsessed with space. Aside from the documentaries and books, I am also autistic. So, when I like a thing, I really like a thing. Ultimately, astronomy and astrophysics ignite my curiosity.”
Because of this interest in astronomy, some of Alex’s plans include making discoveries about outerspace, researching outerspace at the university level, and teaching. Alex is excited about possibly contributing to new technology and space exploration through a career in astrophysics.
Being a student at Kalamazoo College is just the first step in Alex’s journey. After earning a bachelor’s degree, Alex also plans to pursue a master’s degree and a doctorate. The Friedman & Simon, L.L.P. scholarship academic scholarship will relieve some of the financial burden of attending school for several degrees.

Our Scholarship Recipient Is Dedicated to Improving Humankind
Alex dreams of improving humankind by improving our understanding of space and our world. Alex aims to do that on a smaller scale by teaching others about astrophysics in a welcoming, accepting, and patient learning environment.
School wasn’t always easy for Alex. While growing up, Alex was sometimes the victim of bullying in school, which inspired Alex’s goal of eventually becoming a teacher. Alex says, “…I know that I want to create a learning space that welcomes everyone – exactly as they are. When I’ve had people approach me with kindness, acceptance, and patience – it has been an absolute game-changer. Those small gestures of understanding helped me get through the hard days.”
Alex’s experiences have shaped a positive and accepting outlook on life. This outlook will help Alex resonate with future students and encourage their education in a welcoming space.
About Our 2023 Scholarship Winner
After we award our academic scholarship, based upon a submitted essay and other qualifications as to grade point average and academic enrollment, we conduct an interview with the awardee. When we interviewed Alex, we learned that outside of astronomy, our scholarship winner is part of the school choir.
We also learned about Alex’s biggest inspiration. Alex says, “[My biggest inspiration is] my best friend in high school. We aren’t close anymore, but they showed me that other people like me exist in the world, which is something I am extremely grateful for.”
Deciding to apply for our scholarship was easy for Alex, as our recipient loves to talk about space and pursuing a career in astrophysics. Alex plans to graduate from Kalamazoo College in 2027, and our team is eager to see Alex’s dreams come to life.
