According to officials with the New York State Police, the incident happened between 4:25 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Saturday, January 16 along Smithfield Boulevard, a busy commercial corridor in the upstate New York city of Plattsburgh. A man 46 years of age was riding his bicycle along the side of the road when he swerved into the travel lanes to avoid snow and slush along the shoulder. He was struck by a vehicle driven by a young man from Keeseville, 19 years of age.
The bicyclist was taken to the University of Vermont Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for evaluation of his injuries, which were deemed not to be threatening to his life, according to a follow-up statement released by police officials on Wednesday, January 20.
Observers pointed out the importance of motorists being aware of pedestrians and bicyclists sharing the road with them, especially during winter weather when sidewalks and bicycle lanes are often blocked or made impassable by snow and ice.
