The production of personal watercraft began in 1960 with jet skis. Since their introduction into the world of watercraft caused the number of annual jet ski accidents to rise dramatically. This is particularly because jet skis are regularly available and often offered for rent at beaches and lakes. They are smaller and easier to operate than boats, making them a perfect craft for someone with little to no experience. Unfortunately, this contributes to a great number of accidents. The number one cause of personal watercraft accidents and injuries is operator error.
NBC New York reports that a local woman on a jet ski died in a collision with a boat on Long Island. Last Sunday, two women were killed in separate boating incidents off of Long Island.
Near Baldwin Harbor, an 18-year-old woman operating a jet ski crashed into a 35-foot boat. The woman, who was identified as Caitlin Rose McDonald, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Later that afternoon, another woman was killed when two boats collided in Moriches Inlet according to the United States Coast Guard.
