Worker Falls To Death From Scaffolding, No Guardrails

When compared to the same period last year, construction accidents and fatalities rose in the first seven months of 2018. This is according to the city’s Department of Buildings, which oversees construction and job site safety in the city. The number of accidents rose from 386 to 457, an 18.4% increase. The number of injuries also rose 17% from 401 to 469. Meanwhile, deaths from construction accidents doubled from four to eight. This trend seems to be repeating itself in 2019, as more reports of deadly construction accidents continue to make headlines. The Real Deal reports that a scaffold at Milstein Tower lacked safety guardrails when a worker fell to his death.

The incident occurred on May 18th at Milstein Tower, located at 335 Madison Avenue. 49-year-old Guiseppe Pagano, a resident of Queens, was working to clean debris off of a scaffold on the fifth floor. He fell through a part of the structure that was lacking safety guardrails. He fell approximately thirty feet to the second floor. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Department of Buildings intends to file violations against the site and has issued a full stop order on the work occurring at the site. A representative from the DOB said that guardrails were required at the site. The construction management company, Sciame Construction, said that Pagano was a long-time worker for the company. A person who is representing the project said that the guardrails may have been removed by a contractor on a floor where an interior curtain wall was being installed.

The city recorded 18 construction deaths in 2018. In April, three construction workers were killed at job sites within a week. The DOB announced that it will be ensuring safety compliance by sending 90 inspectors to some 5,000 sites.
