Transit Worker Falls In Train Tunnel, Electrocuted By Rail But Lives
The New York subway system is not without its share of problems. Subway officials work amid hampering conditions to keep trains running on time. These problems include ancient signals, creaky trains, and more recently, people who venture onto the tracks. In 2017, there were 900 incidents where someone was on the tracks or was hit by a train after getting too close to the tracks on the platform. Only a small percentage of the incidents were reported to have been attempted suicides; many of the incidents occur when a person drops something onto the tracks and ventures to retrieve it. Some incidents included people who accidentally fell onto the tracks.
The New York Post reports that a veteran transit worker was seriously injured after falling onto the subway tracks. The incident occurred at the Yankee Stadium subway station on Friday, September 6th.
The 52-year-old MTA worker was overseeing work in the southbound D train tunnel at the 161st Street Station at around 3 a.m. He was walking the tracks when he was electrocuted by the third rail.
Not only did the man survive, but he was able to climb the stairs to the subway emergency exit hatch. An ambulance picked him up at Ogden and Jerome Avenues and transported him to Harlem Hospital.
According to co-workers, the man was lucky and only suffered from burns to his leg.
Just last month, a man who was suspected to have been homeless was killed as he walked along the tracks in the tunnels. He was electrocuted by the power that runs through the trains’ third rail.
