Riding a snowmobile is a popular activity in areas with enough snow to support the machines, but they come with their own dangers. Obstacles hidden in the snow can get caught on the tread and force the vehicle to crash, similar to how hitting something on a bicycle or motorcycle can cause crashes.
The Sun Community News reported recently that a man from Altona, NY, is in critical condition after a tragic snowmobile accident in upstate New York. The incident happened along a snowmobile trail near New York State Route 86.

According to officials with the New York State Police, the incident took place between 5:55 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Sunday, March 7, 2021 along a reportedly well-maintained snowmobile trail about two miles from New York State Route 86 in Adirondack Park, a forest preserve in the northeastern part of New York. A man from Altona, 33 years of age, was riding north along the trail on a snowmobile when he struck a support cable attached to a power and utility pole along the trail.
The impact sent the snowmobile airborne, ejecting the rider. His impact with the cable and then the ground caused critical injuries. He was medically transported by life flight to the University of Vermont Medical Center at Burlington, where he remained in critical condition on Tuesday, March 9.
No further details were available, and the accident remains under an active and ongoing investigation by the New York State Police.
