The Atlanta Black Star reported last week on a Long Island tragedy when two young children were seriously injured by an SUV driver on the side of a Ronkonkoma roadway.
A 31-year-old Hauppauge woman was driving her white Ford Explorer when she hit two young boys, one nine-year-old and one twelve-year-old, as they were riding bikes alongside the road. A third boy, who is six years old, was not hit and went for help after the accident. The SUV driver sped away and did not wait for police or other first responders to arrive. She was arrested less than twelve hours later at her home and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury.

Both boys were transported, one by ambulance and one by medical helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where one boy received emergency surgery for deep abdominal gashes, multiple hip fractures, and kidney, lung, and colon damage in addition to a concussion. The other had three broken ribs, a broken elbow and thumb, and a snapped leg that may require amputation.
While authorities have not speculated on motive, it was noted that all three of the boys were African-American and the woman was a caucasian.
