A passing off-duty NYPD captain and a security guard were both traveling when they saw the accident. Both leaped into action to save the two injured people, pulling them out of the wreckage of their vehicle. The responding Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department officers applied a tourniquet to the driver, whose leg had been amputated in the crash, staunching the flow of blood and saving her life.
The passenger sustained minor injuries and both victims were transported via ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center. The accident closed northbound lanes between the Englewood Cliffs and Alpine exits while the wreckage was cleared and the accident was investigated.
Other responding units included police from Tenafly, Englewood Cliffs, and Fort Lee, along with the Closter Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Corps, and the Hackensack University Medical Center EMS.
