Americans die in roadway crashes at a higher rate than in any other country. That said, there are some interesting statistics regarding auto crash deaths in the United States. Men are twice as likely to die in auto accidents as women. Elderly men and younger men have the highest rate of death. A majority of fatal accidents involve drinking and driving. Rural roads represented more fatalities than urban roadways. Drivers are 2.5 times more likely to die on a rural road than an urban street. According to the NHTSA, 55% of all fatal car accidents in 2015 involved just one vehicle.
Rochester First reports that a fatal crash in Rochester involved a car hitting a utility pole then striking three pedestrians.
The crash occurred last Wednesday morning on Edgewood Avenue in Brighton.
A car being driven by Ninoshka Vazquez of Rochester left the roadway for unknown reasons. Vazquez was heading south on Edgewood Avenue when the vehicle veered from the roadway and struck a telephone pole. The car then struck three pedestrians.
An unidentified adult female who was babysitting the children involved in the accident was pronounced dead at the scene. A 9-year-old child died of their injuries later at Strong Memorial Hospital.
A second child, who is 2 years old, is in critical condition at Strong Memorial.
Vazquez remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with the investigation. Vazquez had her 1-month old child in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Police say that it is too early in the investigation to say definitively what caused the accident.
