Since 2005, there have been 448 major cruise ship accidents reported. Between 2005 and 2011, 16 people died in accidents on cruise ships. Between 2010 and 2013, 15 cruise ships have been sunk. Between 2005 and 2013, 66 passenger ships have reportedly run aground. Fire is another major concern. Between 1990 and 2011, there were 79 fires on cruise ships.
The Seatrade Cruise News reports that ineffective bridge interaction was a factor in a Carnival ship hitting the New York pier.
The Carnival ship Horizon was maneuvering into the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in August 2018. The ship hit an adjacent pier.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the incident was ineffective interaction between the master and the docking pilot. Other factors included ineffective bridge team oversight. The third officer was also placed in a location without a view of the bow.
The incident occurred on August 28, 2018. There were a total of 6,361 passengers on board the cruise ship at the time.
The ship was attempting to maneuver into berth number 2 at Pier 88. Its bow struck the corner of the adjacent Pier 90.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in the incident. However, Pier 90’s walkway, roof parking garage, and facilities suffered from serious structural damage. The ship also sustained minor damage. In total, the damage was estimated to be at a cost of about $2.5 million in cumulative damage.
