The New York Post reported recently that a tragic motor vehicle accident along the Long Island Expressway in the Fresh Meadows neighborhood of the New York City borough of Queens on the morning of Tuesday, April 27, 2021 led to critical injuries for a New York City Police Department Highway Unit officer.

According to a news release issued by the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the incident took place between 1:50 a.m. and 2:10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 along the Long Island Expressway in Fresh Meadows, a neighborhood in the central part of Queens. A NYPD Highway Unit officer was investigating a previous motor vehicle accident on the roadway when he was struck by a car headed east on the expressway. The officer was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital Queens in critical condition, while the driver of the vehicle that hit him was apprehended at the scene of the collision. Police units shut down eastbound traffic on the Long Island Expressway to investigate the accident scene and clean up after the incident.
The accident remains under an active and ongoing investigation by the New York City Police Department. The identity of the driver that hit the police officer has not been released as of early Tuesday.
