The Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides millions of New Yorkers transportation each day via their buses and subway system. For the most part, these rides are safe, and occupants reach their destinations without incident. However, between 2015 and 2018, MTA buses were involved in 21,823 crashes. This equates to an average of 23 incidents per day over the span of 31 months. These crashes led to 2,520 people suffering from injuries in the crashes. Furthermore, school buses were involved in at least 180 of the accidents. When MTA buses are involved in crashes, the drivers do not call the police. They instead contact a dispatch. The agency then sends a team to the accident site to take photos, measurements, and interview witnesses.
The New York Post reports that four people were injured in an MTA bus accident in Brooklyn.
The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. near the intersection of East New York and Ralph Avenues in the Brownsville area of Brooklyn.
After the driver of the bus suffered from an undisclosed medical episode, they lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk.
After driving onto the sidewalk, the B12 bus hit a lamppost, three small trees, a street sign, and two parked cars. One of the cars was an Uber BMW with two passengers. The impact caused the lamppost to collapse, injuring a pedestrian.
None of the passengers on the bus were injured. The driver was not charged in the incident and received drug and alcohol testing. At current, the status of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s investigation has not been disclosed.
