Spring and summer mark the beginning of motorcycle season, but some people use motorcycles year-round. Motorcycling becomes much more common on the roadways when the weather is warmer generally better.
However, while motorcycles make up just 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities in 2017. That same year, 5,172 motorcycle drivers and passengers died in crashes. Of the drivers who died in 2017, 28% were impaired by alcohol.
In the majority of motorcycle cases involving crashes with passenger vehicles, it is the passenger vehicle that violated the motorcycle’s right-of-way.
