Kajol Kalliecharan’s journey into medicine did not begin in a classroom. It began with loss. Cancer has shaped her life in profound ways. Nine of her grandfather’s eleven siblings passed away from the disease, and her family endured the heartbreaking loss of her five-year-old cousin to neuroblastoma. Ms. Kalliecharan’s family has lost too many lives to cancer, and facing this devastating truth has become her life’s calling. Now a student at the University of Miami pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology on a pre-med track, Kajol is transforming that personal history into purpose. In recognition of her academic dedication, research contributions, and commitment to advancing cancer awareness and treatment, she has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Friedman & Simon, L.L.P. Academic Scholarship. Her application stood out among an impressive pool of nearly 2,000 submissions, reflecting both her achievements and the strength of her vision for the future.
A Personal Mission Shaped by Loss
For Kajol, studying cancer is a deeply personal endeavor. The stories of her family members and the absence left behind by those who lost their lives continue to guide her path forward. Her goal is to become a physician-scientist, someone who not only treats patients but also contributes to the development of new therapies. She is driven by a clear purpose: to better understand how cancer develops, evades the immune system, and resists treatment, and to use that knowledge to improve outcomes for others.
Turning Education Into Impact
At the University of Miami, Kajol’s coursework in microbiology and immunology provides the scientific foundation for her ambitions. Through her studies, she explores how the immune system functions, how diseases progress at the cellular level, and how emerging therapies can target complex conditions like cancer. But her education extends far beyond the lecture hall. Kajol is actively involved in research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she works in the Shah Lab. There, she investigates tumor behavior and treatment resistance, contributing to efforts to better understand one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. This hands-on experience allows her to apply what she learns in the classroom to real-world challenges, bringing her closer to her goal of helping develop more effective treatments for patients.
Research, Leadership, and Advocacy
Kajol’s work doesn’t stop in the lab. Across her research, leadership roles, and community involvement, she has built a path that reflects both her scientific curiosity and her commitment to helping others. Her research experience continues to grow alongside her studies. She was recently selected as one of just 22 students, out of 500 applicants, to participate in a highly competitive cancer research program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She also contributes as an undergraduate trainee in the SPARK (Scholarly Projects and Research Knowledge) program, where she explores cancer biology through both experimental and computational approaches. On campus, Kajol is equally engaged in supporting her peers. As Co-Chair of Mentorship for the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), she helps guide fellow pre-med students as they navigate their own academic paths. She also serves as External Treasurer for the Committee on Student Organizations (COSO), where she helps organize and support large-scale campus initiatives. Her commitment to cancer awareness extends well beyond the university. Recognizing a gap in education for younger audiences, Kajol founded the first American Cancer Society On Campus (ACSOC) chapter in Miami-Dade County. Through this organization, she leads student-driven efforts to promote cancer awareness and prevention education, helping ensure that younger generations are better informed about their health. She also volunteers with the Live Like Bella Foundation, supporting pediatric cancer patients and their families. For Ms. Kalliecharan, this work is not separate from her academic goals—it is deeply connected to the personal experiences that first inspired her to pursue this path.
Bringing Science and Compassion Together
Kajol’s approach to medicine extends beyond research and clinical care. She believes that healing also involves connection, imagination, and emotional support, especially for young patients. While still in high school, she wrote a children’s book titled The Superpower of Imagination – A Clever Approach to Pediatric Cancer. In the story, a young boy uses his imagination to escape the confines of his hospital room, turning it into an adventure and finding strength in the process. Today, Kajol continues to share that message. In partnership with the Live Like Bella Foundation, she helps distribute the book to pediatric cancer wards across South Florida and public libraries to help families during these challenging moments. Through this work, she highlights an idea that shapes everything she does: that treating illness is only part of the process—supporting patients with empathy, creativity, and hope is just as essential.
Looking Ahead: A Career in Research and Medicine
After completing her undergraduate studies, Kajol plans to pursue an MD/PhD to become a physician-scientist. She hopes to work at the intersection of clinical care and research, developing new therapies for aggressive cancers, including glioblastoma and pediatric brain tumors. Her long-term goal is to contribute to advancements in cancer treatment while also providing compassionate, patient-centered care—ensuring that scientific progress translates into meaningful outcomes for those who need it most.
