The Centers for Disease Control reports that in 2016, there were 5,987 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in the United States. On average, this equates to a death every 1.5 hours. There were also 129,000 pedestrians treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries sustained in a traffic crash. Pedestrians are one and a half times more likely to be killed in a traffic collision than passengers in a vehicle. Adults aged 65 and older accounted for 20% of all pedestrian deaths in 2016, accounting for 15% of the total. One in five children killed in traffic collisions were children under the age of 15.

Spectrum Local News reports that a legislator is calling for more transparency after a fatal pedestrian accident in Rochester. Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart joined the grieving family of a pedestrian killed in a traffic accident to call for more police transparency.
Roderick Cunningham was killed just over a week ago as he walked down Parsells Avenue in Rochester’s Eastside. The driver involved in the accident was never identified by police and faced no charges. Now the family wants to know why.
Cunningham says that any time there is an accident involving serious injury or death, the police should release all information, including factors that contributed to the accident, to the family.
The Rochester Police Department says it is not their policy to release the identities of people who are not charged but make police reports available to those who request it.
The police report of the accident that killed Cunningham states that the driver called the accident in and waited at the scene for police. The report said that the driver was not intoxicated but did not indicate the speed at which the driver was traveling.
