According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, twice as many fatalities occur on two-lane roads. 75% of two-vehicle head-on collisions occurred on two-lane, undivided roads. Head-on collisions are disproportionately deadly.
One of the leading causes of head-on collisions on two-lane roads is improper passing or passing illegally. In New York, passing is prohibited when there is a solid yellow line on the driver’s side of the roadway. It is also prohibited in a no passing zone demarked by yellow lines or signs. It is also prohibited when approaching a curve in the roadway or a crest or a hill.
