According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the construction industry is expected to increase over the next few years. Although the construction industry only accounts for a small percentage of overall employment, it contributes significantly to the number of on-the-job deaths reported annually. Approximately 30% of all reported fatalities come from the construction industry. Of these fatalities, the majority are caused by falls. The next largest group of fatalities within the construction industry was caused by being struck by an object, and the third-largest group of fatalities involves death by electrocutions. Fall protection remains the top reported OSHA violation on construction sites, followed by inadequate hazard communication.
NBC 4 New York reports that a scaffolding collapsed in Brooklyn, injuring three workers.
The incident occurred at about 2:30 P.M. in Brooklyn on Grand Avenue in Williamsburg.
The collapse caused three workers to become trapped beneath the debris. FDNY had to rescue the workers.
According to the Department of Buildings, the work site was a three-story building that was being converted into a six-story building. At the time of the collapse, the workers were dismantling and adjusting the scaffolding on the top of a neighboring building.
The collapse caused debris and large chunks of wood to become scattered across the neighboring rooftop.
The Department of Buildings is currently investigating the collapse. The high winds that were experienced on Thursday may have played a part in the collapse of the scaffolding.
