Driver Of A Moped Hits A Pedestrian Who Died At The Hospital
In 2018, fatal accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists dropped to a record low, causing lawmakers to cheer Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative. However, 2019 was not so kind.
As of December 22nd, 2019, there were 114 pedestrian deaths on New York Streets, compared to 110 in 2018. This caused lawmakers and activists to try and step up to the challenge of making the streets of New York safer for both pedestrians and bicyclists. Many of the suggested changes were put into practice, including increasing the enforcement of traffic laws and allowing cyclists to cross the road at the same time as pedestrians.
The NYC Streetsblog reports that a pedestrian was killed by a moped rider in East Harlem.
The accident happened shortly before 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday at 118th Street and Pleasant Avenue in Harlem.
60-year-old Anette Camaya was crossing 118th Street when she was hit by a 34-year-old driving a 2019 Wuxi Dongma Z6 electric scooter. The driver of the scooter, only identified as a 34-year-old male, was driving south.
Camaya was rushed to Harlem Hospital Center where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
The driver of the scooter remained on scene and was cooperative with law enforcement. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police did not have any information detailing if the scooter driver had run a red light. No arrest has been made and the accident is still under investigation,
So far this year, 10 pedestrians have been killed.
