The U.S. News & World Report reported recently on a tragic workplace accident in the Mount Eden neighborhood of the Bronx that led to the death of a young mechanic last Thursday, February 18 when an elevator he was maintaining fell and crushed him.
According to a news release issued by the New York City Police Department with additional information from the NYC Department of Buildings and the Champion Elevator Corp., the incident took place between 9:25 a.m. and 9:35 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Thursday, February 18, 2021 in a building in the Mount Eden neighborhood of the Bronx as an elevator technician worked to modernize an elevator in the building. In what was described as a freak accident, the elevator fell during the work and crushed the mechanic between the elevator car and the wall of the shaft.

The victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital and his identity was not released to the press as notification was pending of his next of kin. The Champion Elevator Corp. has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation into this tragic incident, which is currently underway. The New York Daily News reported that, tragically, the mechanic was newly wed, leaving his bride now a young widow.
